About the Studio.
An independent film studio founded by writer, director and producer Tumelo Tlou.
Tumelo Tlou
Stories came first. At five or six years old, I was already filling pages with characters and worlds, long before I knew that writing or directing could become a profession.
Film remained a constant as I grew older. From the age of thirteen, I would stay up through the night to watch the Academy Awards — usually against my parents’ rules — and try to see every nominated film and performance beforehand. I did not yet understand the machinery behind filmmaking, but I was already paying attention to why certain choices, performances and stories stayed with me.
That love continued even as football became the centre of my life. I went on to play professionally in the League of Ireland and the Northern Irish Premiership, alongside recognition at international youth level. Years spent in elite sporting environments taught me how to work under pressure, recover from setbacks and hold myself to a demanding standard — qualities that would later shape the way I approached film.
By 2024, my path in football had reached a turning point. Around that time, an advertisement for a film production course appeared in my junk folder, and I enrolled. Sitting in the first class did not feel like discovering a new interest; it felt like returning to something that had been there all along.
I made my first student short in April 2025 and left the set certain that I wanted to keep going. When the course’s planned second year was cancelled, the question was no longer whether I would continue, but how. Culture 13 Studios grew from that decision.

Why it was founded
Culture 13 Studios was founded in July 2025 because waiting for a conventional route to reopen was not an option. It became the independent structure through which I and the people around me could continue developing ideas, bringing collaborators together and putting films on screen.
The first major production developed through the studio was Echoes Behind a Perfect Lens, a 34-minute psychological drama and thriller written, directed and produced through Culture 13.
What it is becoming
Culture 13 is still a young studio. I want to build a body of original films and lasting relationships with the people who help make them. Echoes is the first substantial step in that work.
I am interested in human behaviour and the choices people make under pressure. That interest guides the work, while leaving room to explore different genres, places and forms.
Where We Are Going
Each project should take the studio further than the one before it.
The immediate focus is on continuing to write, deepen the craft across directing and production, and develop increasingly ambitious short films. Echoes Behind a Perfect Lens is the studio’s most substantial completed production so far, but it is a foundation rather than a destination.
The longer road leads toward Culture 13’s first independently produced feature film and, beyond that, a wider slate of original work created across countries, cultures and forms. The scale may change, but the standard remains the same: every film must justify the time, trust and effort required to make it.
